Evolution

I can’t wait for us all to get to the last stage. I doubt it will be in my lifetime though :(

What.
Is.
This.
Even.
Are you kidding me?
Is this some kind of joke?
Considering that the Roman Catholic Church is the largest charity on Earth, runs countless schools and hospitals, shelters, crisis centers, etc…
Considering that millions of Christians travel the world to bring food and water to people in need…
Considering that Muslim scholars brought us algebra…
Yeah.. I think it’s safe to say that religion is a good thing overall.

This sort of thing no longer angers me, it saddens me.
We all know that religion has been and still is used as an excuse for people to project their intolerances. However things like this…well. For one thing it makes the assumption (deliberate or not) that religious people are somehow not as well evolved as non believers which is highly offensive. Secondly without religion we wouldn’t have some of the awesome things that we enjoy today; the Byzantines for example who were Christian Orthodox were responsible for the first hospitals and Universities. Contrary to popular pseudo history, the Church was heavily involved in backing scientific advancement and you only need to look towards the Vatican today to see not only the mass amounts of charity work but also the huge financial backing of scientific advancement with medical research using adult stem cells (which is where the major breakthroughs are happening with things like Parkinson’s disease).
I don’t mean for the above to comment I made to sound like a religion trumps all argument because I am not. I know of many amazing people and charities that are non religious who do outstanding work and in history there have also been many great minds who were also non-religious. The point I am trying to make is that is not right to assume that we are better off without religion. Yes things have been done in the name of religion (be it Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and even Paganism) that have been truly awful and this is something that still goes on today. But to overlook the massive achievements that have stemmed from religion isn’t right nor is it fair.
Whilst we would be better off without fundamentalism, we would most certainly be worse off without religion than a lot of people care to realise.

Sigh. This new trend of atheists and non religious people on tumblr thinking they’re special snowflakes is getting really, really old. It is possible to believe or not believe and not be a dick about it.

Well I really hope other atheists don’t think so highly of themselves but I don’t even get why throwing religion away is a part of evolution anyway. Religion, like many other things, has its good sides and bad sides. You may be agnostic, but you shouldn’t offend people whose choice of faith is different from yours. Come on, let’s respect one another; you don’t need to like a certain religion/atheism but, like the comment above, you don’t need to be a dick about it.
